Specialty Trainer Guide

This is a physician or APP within a specialty who is designated to help support provider training classes prior to go-live. Residents and fellows are eligible for this role as well. Specialty trainers will have extra training and early access to Epic prior to the start of provider classes.

8-10 hours for independent pre-training work, and then 4-8 hours per class depending on the specialty and inpatient/outpatient (~3-5 classes). All time is compensated.

Specialty trainers will spend time prior to class in eLearnings and SmartUser online classes. They will also participate in User Settings Lab Modeling (4-hour session), to prepare their colleagues for personalization during the classes.

The classes are in-person and will be led by Epic trainers. Some specialties with complex workflows could be longer. They will cover common scenarios, chart review, documentation, orders, efficiency tools, messaging, patient lists, and many other Epic tools. Specialty trainers will assist the providers in completing personalized user settings during the class.

The specialty trainer assisting with context, specialty scenarios, and workflows specific to their specialty. The specialty trainer will support the User Settings portion of the class.

Compensation will be $125 per hour, with hours submitted through HSF. Non-employed specialty trainers will receive a 1099 form.

Provider classes begin December 14, 2026, and run through February 26, 2027, for UAB and affiliates. The class schedule will be published in August 2026.
