On February 27, 2027, UAB Medicine facilities will transition their electronic health record (EHR) system to Epic. Facilities included in this change include:
- Cooper Green
- UA College of Community Health Services
- UAB HSF Clinics
- UAB Callahan Eye Hospital
- UAB Callahan OSF Clinics
- UAB Hospital
- UAB Medical West Hospital
- UAB School of Dentistry
- UAB School of Health Professions
- UAB School of Nursing
- UAB School of Optometry
- UAB SOM Huntsville Regional
As we get closer to this change, we want to address some important action items that are coming.
What’s a super user? What’s a specialty trainer?
- Super user – staff member identified to support training, go-live, and post‑go‑live workflows by combining knowledge of Epic with organization-specific policies and legacy processes
- Specialty trainer – practicing medical providers who work with principal trainers to develop and deliver specialty-specific curriculum, mentor other specialty trainers, lead user settings labs, and train specialist end users
What are the major differences?
- Super users
- Training period: October 26, 2026 – November 25, 2026
- Trained before others
- Receive additional training and e-learning
- Learn how to support teammates during the transition
- Specialty trainers
- Training period: November 16, 2026 – February 12, 2027
- Trained before others for their specific training track
- Help Epic trainers tailor content to their specialty
Is anyone else involved?
- Yes, there are also principal trainers and change companions. A principal trainer is someone who works at a health care facility to train hospital employees in the Epic healthcare record system. Change champions implement changes at the operational level and ensure the smooth adoption of new processes.

- Primary role – provide support before, during, and after the Epic transition
- Focus – onboarding support and troubleshooting
- Support period – November 30 through go-live and upgrades
- Classroom involvement – help facilitate classes
- Epic go-live support – provide at-the-elbow support
- Additional responsibilities – maintain ongoing Epic knowledge and support updates
- Specialty trainers
- Primary role – train and guide peers within specific specialty
- Focus – training and specialty-specific instruction
- Support period – during classroom training and user setting labs
- Classroom involvement – assist Epic Trainers during in-person training
- Epic go-live support – support providers during training, not during go-live
- Additional responsibilities – lead user setting labs following classroom training
